COVID-19 Reporting

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is committed to providing New Mexico residents with the most current information regarding COVID-19 in the state. As part of the COVID-19 pandemic response, NMDOH has been collecting and analyzing statewide data for COVID-19 positive cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Starting in 2020 until now (February 2024), NMDOH produced a series of static reports detailing counts, trends, and demographic breakdowns for COVID-19 cases (adult and pediatric), hospitalizations, vaccinations, and variants of concern. The reports were a solid part of the pandemic response, and important for informing policy makers and residents of New Mexico with details about the impact COVID-19 has had on our state’s populations.

Currently, we will present COVID-19 data as part of the Viral Respiratory Infection Dashboard.

Viral Respiratory Infection Dashboard

Recognizing that COVID-19 is only one of the important and preventable viral respiratory infections of interest to New Mexicans, we have developed an interactive data dashboard for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV.  These are seasonal illnesses which recur every year and impact the health of the state’s population.  We update the dashboard weekly with the most current available data.

Please see the link to the NMDOH Viral Respiratory Infection Dashboard in the graphic below:

The dashboard’s default view is a “Snapshots” tab that contains snapshots of the most recent actionable information related to COVID-19, RSV, and influenza.  This includes a county-level map and the statewide trend for % ED discharge diagnosis, as well as trends in influenza-like activity for multiple seasons and New Mexico regions.

There are currently six additional tabs with more in-depth interactive visualizations for exploration.  Three of these tabs allow for customized queries of case rates and hospital discharge data for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV.  Two tabs detail COVID-19 and influenza vaccines administered and county-level uptake.  The sixth tab contains general notes for the dashboard, a description of data sources, and links to national data and CDC resources on respiratory illnesses.

The dashboard draws from the Respiratory Virus Hospitalization Surveillance Network (RESP-NET) for laboratory-confirmed hospitalizations caused by one of the three key respiratory viruses: SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and RSV.  Additional data sources for the dashboard includes New Mexico statewide data for cases, databases for vaccinations in New Mexico, emergency department discharge data, and ILI-NET for tracking influenza-like illnesses.

We welcome your questions and feedback to make this dashboard more useful: COVID.Epi-Reports@doh.nm.gov.

COVID-19 Variant of Concern Annual Reports

The COVID-19 Variant of Concern annual reports contain the genomic sequencing results reported to NMDOH for epidemiologic surveillance of the emergence and spread COVID-19 variants in NM. These annual reports aggregate results of sequenced specimens, and when possible are matched to the patient-level demographic information, associated health outcomes, and symptoms and underlying health conditions. A small proportion of positive COVID-19 tests are sequenced so numbers presented here should not be considered representative of all positive COVID cases.
